Nine providers announced for $1m digital tech fund

Nine providers around the country have been announced today as the successful applicants to a $1 million contestable fund for projects that will engage students in digital technologies. 

1 1 laptopEducation Minister Hekia Parata said there was high demand for the fund, with 74 proposals from education and digital technologies providers from around New Zealand.

“We’re funding providers who have innovative and smart projects that will capture teachers’ and students’ imagination and help them get skilled in using and developing digital technologies,” says Ms Parata.

The projects are part of a broader package of support for schools when the digital technologies curriculum content starts to be rolled out in 2018.

Among the successful providers was Ruapehu College. Principal Kim Basse was delighted with the news.

“We’ve been working with Ngāti Rangi’s Technology Hub to enhance digital literacies across the whole community,” she said.

Basse says the collaborative and innovative approach to digital technologies at Ruapehu has helped produce truly global learners and self-motivated students. But she says their efforts in digital technology extend beyond the classroom and into the community as part of the Ruapehu Whanau Transformation Plan. The plan, launched in 2013, spans across education, health, housing and employment.

Basse says the funding will help them continue to achieve their goals and hopefully roll out what they’re doing to other communities around New Zealand.

Tasman-based Ministry of Inspiration was another provider selected.

"We are so pleased that the Ministry of Education is supporting the launch of Programmable Electronic Kits (PE Kits) within our region," says Leanne Pressman, of the Ministry of Inspiration. "This is especially beneficial for our rural students who do not have easy access to professionally-led specialised technology education. By provision of the hands-on PE Kits, we aim to foster excellence in programming and underlying technology skills required to become true technology innovators and not simply users."

Other successful providers were King’s High School in Dunedin, The Technology Hub Ltd, Core Education Ltd Tech Futures, Core Education Ltd  - He Hui Matihiko a-Takiwa, University of Canterbury, Online Education Limited, working with Code Avengers, and the Pam Ferguson Charitable Trust, working with OMG Tech.

“These projects will support the work our Government is doing to prepare young Kiwis to successfully meet the demands of the 21st century,” says Parata.
